Avis (Neigher) Gareffa of Springfield

Avis (Neigher) Gareffa, 71, of Springfield died Jan. 7 surrounded by family. She was the widow of Domenic Gareffa. Born in Springfield, she was the daughter of the late Manuel and Frances (Taub) Neigher. She graduated from the former Classical High School and the  University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She worked in book publishing in New York, N.Y. from 1960-1963; and was associated with literary agent, Sterling Lord, and Doubleday & Co. as a market researcher. She was employed as a social worker with the Springfield Welfare Department, and the Massachusetts Division of Child Guardianship from 1963 until 1972. She was co-founder and treasurer of the AVIS NEIGHER GALLERY, the original artists’ collaborative, established in Springfield in 1977. She was a member of the Board of Camp Star, Inc. She is survived by a sister, Rosalind Siegel of Westport, Conn.; two children, Jessica Gareffa of Springfield, and Jason Gareffa and his wife, Nicole, of Los Angeles, Calif. Memorial contributions
