Sarah Altman

Sarah Altman, 86, of Springfield, died Jan. 27 at home with her family by her side. She was the widow of Bernard S. Altman. Born in New York City, she was the daughter of the late Ralph and Leah Zeldis. She attended the City College of New York with a major in accounting. She was the bookkeeper for the family business Altman Brothers Paper Co., Inc., and was also the first bookkeeper for the Kings Department Stores. She was a member of Temple Beth El and its sisterhood, the Springfield Jewish Community Center and its Foxes & Belles, B’nai Brith Women, the American Civil Liberties Union and a life member of Hadassah. She was a former treasurer of the Hadassah Thrift Shop, a volunteer for Rachel’s Table, and participated in the Read A Loud Program at the Alice Beal School. She loved to play mah-jongg and scrabble. She survived by  three sons, Ron of Baltimore, MD,  Melvyn of Springfield, and Elliot (Phyllis) of Longmeadow;  three grandsons, Jason, Brian, and Ian; and a niece, Ronna (Larry) Tillman.
