Third Annual Dreidel Dance for Teens
The Third Annual Dreidle Dance will take place on Saturday, Dec. 10, from 7-9 p.m. at the Lander Grinspoon Academy, 257 Prospect Street in Northampton. The Dreidle Dance is sponsored by Jewish Teens Of the Valley, B’nai Tzedek Teen Philanthropy Project, Lander Grinspoon Academy, and is largely funded by the Harold Grinspoon Foundation Teen Initiative.
The dance is open to teens in grades 6-9, and teens in grades 10-12 can apply to be assistant chaperones and help lead games and activities.
The dance puts a new twist on the traditional school dance…and not just because it includes sufganiot (jelly donuts). This event is an opportunity for Jewish teens to celebrate the Festival of Lights with friends and, at the same time, help reduce hunger in our region.
As part of admission, teens bring cans of food to donate to the Amherst and Northampton Survival Centers. Teens will also be bringing spare change to play dreidel and have the opportunity to donate their winnings to the Tzedakah (charity) organization of their choice. “Hanukkah commemorates many miracles and represents the hope of believing in our strength and our ability to overcome obstacles that come our way,” says Rachael Goren-Watts, the Coordinator of JTOV. “At the Dreidle Dance, we get to make our own small miracles.”
The dance draws Jewish teens from throughout the Pioneer Valley. More than 70 teens—members of local synagogues, the B’nai Brith Youth Organization, and unaffiliated teens—attended the last year’s Dreidle Dance.
