Leon Elfman, 86, of Holyoke, died Feb. 5. He was the husband of Beatrice Elfman. He was a lifelong Holyoke resident, who served his country in World War II and received a Purple Heart. He was active in both the Holyoke and Jewish communities. He was a member of the Rodphey Shalom Synagogue in Holyoke, serving as its president, chef at various functions, and coordinating fund raising activities. He was a Mason, a Shriner and a board member of the Old Holyoke corporation. He operated Millinery Fashions, a chain of retail hat stores in New England, designed and manufactured hats, developed real estate and served as a licensed insurance broker.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Marc and his wife, Margaret, of Wellesley, Richard and his wife Bonnie, of Longmeadow, and Ira and his wife Ellen of Longmeadow; and eight grandchildren, Elizabeth, Andrew, Michael, Daniel, Joshua, Suzanne, Emily, and Zachary. Memorial contributions may be made to the Rodphey Shalom Synagogue, 1800 Northampton St.
