Josef Vatnikov, 90, of Longmeadow, died May 8. An international chess master, journalist, and Doctor of Law, he was born in Berdichev, Ukraine, in 1923. At age of 18 he joined the Red Army and fought in World War II as a paratrooper. He served as a Chief Coach of Moscow State University chess team for 25 years. He immigrated to U.S.A. from Russia in 1991. He was known for promoting the Game of Chess through his numerous publications in both Russian and English. He is survived by his wife, his son and daughter, grandchildren and a great-grandson.
