Dr. Richard Freund
LONGMEADOW – Last month, Congregation B’nai Torah welcomed Dr. Richard Freund, this year’s featured speaker at the annual Izenstein Family Memorial Lecture. Dr. Freund serves as Director of the Maurice Greenberg Center for Judaic Studies and Greenberg Professor of Jewish History at the University of Hartford. He presented a fascinating discourse on comparative medical ethics in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. B’nai Torah also hosted scholar-in-residence Rabbi Avi Weiss, founder of Hebrew Institute of Riverdale, Yeshivat Chovevei Torah Rabbinical School and Yeshivat Maharat. Rabbi Weiss spoke three times during the course of Shabbat, including during a Friday night dinner that attracted over 100 attendees. He spoke of the challenges confronting the Jewish people and articulated his vision of an Orthodoxy that is more open and tolerant.
