SPRINGFIELD – Melton Year Two and Melton Graduate classes are again being offered this fall. The Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning is sponsored by Temple Beth El, the Springfield Jewish Community Center and the Jewish Federation of Western Mass. Year Two classes are offered for 30 weeks beginning Sept. 11, either on Thursday mornings from 9 – 11 a.m. with Rabbi Amy Wallk Katz and Dalia Davis at the JCC, 1160 Dickinson St., or Thursday evenings from 7-9 p.m. with Rabbi Katz and Rabbi Devorah Jacobson at the Jewish Nursing Home, 770 Converse St. in Longmeadow.
The curriculum for Year Two includes both of the following:
– Dramas of Jewish Living Throughout the Ages – What are the lessons of Jewish history, from the earliest wanderings of Abraham to the modern experiment in Jewish statehood?
– Ethics of Jewish Living – How do Jewish teachings shed light on contemporary issues such as the environment, inter-personal relationships, end-of-life decisions, and stem-cell research?
New Graduate Classes
– Book of Kings II – This 10-week class will be held on Tuesdays from 9:30 – 11 a.m. starting Sept. 30 at the Springfield JCC. The instructor is Dalia Davis; tuition is $200 plus a $25 materials fee.
– Beyond Borders: The History of the Arab-Israeli Conflict – This 18-week class will be held on Mondays from 7-8:30 p.m. starting Oct. 6 at the Springfield JCC. The instructor is Dalia Davis; tuition is $275 plus a $80 book fee.
n Mysticism and Kabbalah: Secret Knowledge in Judaism – This 15-week class will be held on Tuesdays from 6:30 – 8 p.m. starting Oct. 7 at the Jewish Nursing Home. The instructor is Rabbi Devorah Jacobson; tuition is $250 per person, plus a book fee of $80.
