HOLYOKE – On a recent Shabbat in November at Congregation Sons of Zion in Holyoke, the extended family of Herb and Barbara Goldberg celebrated the upcoming wedding of their grandson Ira Citron to Jodi Dornbush. Ira and Jodi chose this Shabbat so they could share their aufruf with Ira’s grandfather, Herb Goldberg, who received an aliyah in honor of his 92nd birthday. Also called to the Torah were Nitza Seaver in honor of her birthday and service to the synagogue and Noah Bloom on his 30th birthday. The youngest member of Sons of Zion, newborn Ariel Gilberto Colon, was welcomed along with his mother Ysaaca Axelrod and father Peter Colon. Sons of Zion President Steve Levine called this “a great day of celebration and renewal for our synagogue family.” Much candy was thrown and many tears of joy were shed. This “power-packed” Shabbat service was led by Rabbi Saul Perlmutter.
