Alan L. Suher, 69, of Enfield, Conn., formerly of Longmeadow, died at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, Conn. on March 7. He was the husband of Judith (Glazer) Suher for 43 years. Born in Springfield, he was the son of the late Harry and Lucille Suher. He was a graduate of Western New England College and Cornell University’s Food Executive Program. He worked for most of his career in management positions at Sweet Life Foods and in later years at Bozzuto’s. He had been a senator in the Senior Congress, for the state of Connecticut. He was an advocate for people with the rare disease of POEMS syndrome. He was instrumental in this rare disease getting on the forum of ACOR and Smart Patients. Through his website,, he helped to lead other POEMS patients, internationally, to the best resources and facilities to treat this rare disorder. Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Heather Suher and Jennifer (Kevin) Kulas, both of Enfield; three grandchildren, Landon Storm Kulas, Noah Lee Kulas and Kaia Delaney Kulas; and a brother, Steven (Mary) of Seekonk. He was predeceased by a brother, Marvin.
