Melvin “Mel” Grant, 91, of Northampton, died Oct. 7. He was predeceased by his wife, Virginia “Penny” Grant. Born in Springfield, he left high school without finishing and enlisted in the Army during World War II, serving in the Philippines. He finished high school and attended college after the war. He taught high school English for many years, at Commerce, Classical, and finally in Longmeadow. After retiring from teaching, he became a successful realtor. He painted watercolors, wrote hundreds of poems, and became a prolific correspondent with editors of the local newspapers. He is survived by his two children, Brian Grant and his wife, Janet, and Susan Grant and her husband, Henry Walz; his two granddaughters, Lily Grant and Rachel Saunders and her husband, Evan; a sister, Eunice Kofsky and her husband, Murray: a sister-in-law, Bernyce Grant; and many nieces, nephews, and other family members.
