Arthur Stein of Pittsfield and Easthampton died at his home Nov. 29. The son of Goldie and Abe Stein, he was raised in Philadelphia. He was the husband of Sylvia Siegel Stein. He served in the U.S. Army and later graduated from Boston College Law School. He worked as an attorney in Pittsfield until he retired in 2010 at age 85. He served as a public defender and provided pro bono services to those in need. Active in the Jewish community of Pittsfield, he led the Jewish Boy Scouts troop for many years, served as president of Knesset Israel and was involved in Israel Bonds and Jewish National Fund endeavors. He served as the first president of the Berkshire Community College Foundation, was a literacy volunteer to new immigrants and was president and a reader for Reading for the Blind, among other organizations. He is survived by three daughters, Maxine (Henry Simkin), Mindy (Howard Brummer) and Joyce (Michael Turow); nine grandchildren and their partners; brothers-in-law, Robert and Leon Siegel; sister-in-law Carole Siegel; and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions may be made to Knesset Israel in Pittsfield, Hospice of the Fisher Home in Amherst, Jewish Family Service of Western MA and the Jewish National Fund.
