Dr. M. Cecil Michelow, 91, of East Longmeadow, died Jan. 20 at Baystate Medical Center. He was the husband of Berenice (Davis) Michelow. Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, he was the son of the late Sara and Harry Michelow. He received his medical degree from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. He completed his specialty training in Obstetrics/Gynecology in London, England and returned to Johannesburg four years later to practice. He was widely acclaimed for his pioneering work in the early days of in vitro fertilization treatment, and traveled the world lecturing and teaching. He and his wife emigrated to the U.S. in 2004 to be close to their family. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Bryan Michelow (Raizel) of Cleveland, OH, Ian Michelow (Michaela Mendelsohn) of Needham, MA, and Diane Michelow Friedberg (Richard) of Longmeadow; and seven grandchildren, Adam and JJ Michelow, Aidan and Dylan Michelow, and Oliver, Joshua and Jenna Friedberg. He was predeceased by a sister, Myra Zion. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
