Herbert (Herbie) Arthur Goldberg, 94, of Holyoke, died at home Aug. 24. He was the husband of Barbara Schlosberg Goldberg. Born in Boston, he was the son of Matilda and Israel Goldberg. He graduated from Lowell Textile (now UMass-Lowell) with a degree in textile engineering and joined his father in business at the National Felt Company of Easthampton. He volunteered for the United States Navy upon America’s entry into World War II and served as an Ensign JG in the Pacific Theatre. Upon his return from military service, he and his brother Albert (Albie) assumed control of National Felt. He served as president and long-time board member of Congregation Sons of Zion of Holyoke, and in leadership positions with Israel Bonds and Combined Jewish Philanthropies/United Jewish Appeal. He also served for many years as chair and member of the Investment Advisory Board of Easthampton Savings Bank. He was a member of congregation Rodphey Sholom in Holyoke and Temple Emmanu-El in Palm Beach, Fla., and a supporter of Holyoke Hospital, Hadassah Medical Center and many other causes. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Louise Citron, Debra Goldberg and Janet Greenfield; two sons-in-law, Seth Waxman and Richard Greenfield; his grandchildren, Eric Citron, Jamie Citron, Ira Citron, Jodi Citron, Noah Waxman, Lia Waxman, Sarah Waxman, Ethan Waxman, Mollie Newman, Michael Newman, Shana Greenfield, Eve Rosenblum, Jesse Rosenblum, Norman Greenfield and Dana Metcalf; his great-grandchildren Isabelle Citron, Jacob Citron, Scott Citron, Eve Waxman, Lily Newman, Harris Newman and Teddy Newman; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Memorial contributions may be made to Congregation Sons of Zion, Holyoke Hospital or the charity of the donor’s choice. ASCHER-ZIMMERMAN FUNERAL HOME
