Sidney N. Shapiro, 95, formerly of Springfield, died April 5 in Glastonbury, Conn. He was the widower of Ruth (Kastelman) Shapiro. He grew up in Waterbury, Conn., and served during World War II in the U.S. Army Signal Corps. He attended Northern Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago where he received his Doctor of Optometry degree in 1949. He moved to the Springfield area, where he worked in private practice in offices in Springfield and Holyoke. In 1961 he joined Springfield Eye Associates, where he worked for 25 years. He joined the Army Reserves, retiring as a Lt. Colonel in 1982, mostly with the 309th Field Hospital based in Chicopee. He was a longtime member of Temple Beth El. He is survived by three children, Steven (Lynne) of Glastonbury, Conn., Stuart (Janiece) of Lenox, and Todd (Gwen) of Glastonbury, Conn; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to The Masonicare Foundation of Connecticut or the charity of the donor’s choice.
