Dr. Donald C. Shukan, 81, of Longmeadow, died Oct. 21. He was the husband of Penny Shukan. Born in Newark, N.J., he graduated from Temple University and Chicago Medical School. After completing his pediatric residency at Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago, he joined the United States Army Medical Corps in as a captain, where he treated both soldiers and their children at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. After completing his military service, he entered private medical practice in Longmeadow with Dr. Bob Plotkin, joining a growing practice that became Pioneer Valley Pediatrics.  He was also on the staff of Baystate Medical Center and served on the hospital’s Utilization Review Committee. He served on the Tufts Medical School faculty, and as school physician for East Longmeadow.  After retiring from PVP in 2011, he worked part-time at the Charter Oak Health Center in Hartford, and enjoyed volunteering and participating in activities at the Longmeadow Senior Center. He was a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, a 50-year member of the Hampden District Medical Society and a longtime member of Sinai Temple. In addition to his wife, he is survived by four sons, Brian, Evan, Scott and Zachary; two daughters-in-law, Clare and Rachel; and three grandchildren, Abigail, Leah, and Isidore.
