Hadassah honors “Unsung Heroes”

By Stacey Dresner

WESTERN MASS. – The Southern New England Region of Hadassah is honoring several members as 2018 “Unsung Heroes,” including Ellen Gold of Longmeadow and Lori Chastanet of Northborough.

These women will be celebrated for all of the hard work that they do to help support Hadassah at a brunch on Sunday, March 3 at Blue Hill Country Club. Ellen Hershkin, Hadassah National President, will be the special guest speaker.

Ellen Gold became a Hadassah member 36 years ago.

“My mother and grandmother were both members of Hadassah. My mother was very active and very proud of her membership. They were very pleased when I became a member. And when I became president my mother was very proud.”

Gold served in many board positions in the Greater Springfield chapter before becoming president of the chapter. She served on the Western New England Regional Board for more than 20 years. She has chaired several donor dinners and installations, and was the chair of a regional education day. Currently, she is the coordinator of the Greater Springfield Hadassah chapter book club, a position she has held since 2006.

Gold has been involved in a variety of community organization over the years. She coordinated a tutoring program for the newly arrived Russian immigrants, and has been involved as either an officer or board member of community organizations including ORT, the Springfield Hotline to End Rape and Abuse, the Springfield JCC, The National Council of Jewish Women and Rachel’s Table. She has worked for a variety of organizations including Holyoke Community College, Jewish Geriatric Services, the Harold Grinspoon Foundation, the Jewish Federation of Greater Hartford and the Longmeadow Senior Center.

Lori Chastanet has been a member of Hadassah for more than 30 years, beginning with the Needham chapter. Both her mother and grandmother were presidents of their Hadassah chapter in her native Bangor, Maine. Now a lifetime member of Greater Boroughs Hadassah and a part of Hadassah’s Chai Society, Chastanet has served on its board for the past six years as communications chair. For three years she has coordinated the successful Hadassah Boroughs Fashion Show, one of the chapter’s most successful fundraisers and also has coordinated the chapter’s annual winetasting event for several years.

In the wider Jewish community she helped to start up the Jewish Federation of Central Mass.’s Haverim social group. A member of Beth Tikvah in Westborough, she volunteers with the bar and bat mitzvahs functions held at the temple and with the temple’s Shiva house program. Professionally, she has been a women’s apparel rep for 34 years.
