Elsie Ruth Swirsky, 87, of Longmeadow, died at home on April 13 surrounded by her family. She was the widow of Irwin Swirsky. Born in Hartford, Conn., she was the daughter of Dr. Joseph Heyman and Edith (Gordon) Heyman. Raised in West Hartford, she graduated from the Oxford School and from Simmons College, from which she received a bachelor degree in journalism. After a short period of work in Hartford, she married Irwin Swirsky in 1955 and moved to Springfield. She was active in the Women’s Symphony League for many years, a substitute teacher in the Longmeadow schools, and a member of Hadassah, the United Jewish Federation, Crestview Country Club, and the American Contract Bridge League. She is survived by two children, Dr. Michael Swirsky of Longmeadow and Rachel Goldstein, of Charlestown, R.I.; a sister, Rosalie Dana of Dedham; and several nieces and nephews. ASCHER-ZIMMERMAN FUNERAL HOME
