Marc R. Newman, 54, of Longmeadow, died unexpectedly at his home in Longmeadow July 14. He was the husband of Cassie Newman. Born in Springfield, he was the son of Albert and Fern Newman of Longmeadow. He graduated from Western New England College with degrees in criminal justice and psychology. After college he worked at the York Street Jail in Springfield, where he developed a timely and important AIDS education program. He went on to work at the University of Hartford, where he pioneered the “Say Yes to Education” program. He joined the family business, Newman Sewing Machine in 1994 and served as vice president and co-owner for over 25 years. He was also past president of B’nai Jacob synagogue, a longstanding member of the Jewish Community Center of Springfield, and a member of the Shriners antique automotive, motorcycle, and clown unit. In addition to his wife and parents, he is survived by her children, Myles and Leigh Chapman; and his sister and brother-in-law, Melissa and Michael Owen of Suffield, Conn. He was predeceased by his grandparents, Morris and Sylvia Newman of Springfield and Esther and Louis Rachleff, all of Springfield.
