Ruth (Jakubowitsch) Poppel, 97, of Longmeadow, died July 13 at the Jewish Nursing Home. She was the widow of Samuel B. Poppel. Born in Basel, Switzerland, she was the daughter of the late Sara (Grunspan) and Jakob Jakubowitsch. In 1944, she met Lt. Samuel B. Poppel when he was interned in Switzerland after his B-24 was shot down over southern Germany and crash-landed just inside Switzerland. In 1947, she came to the United States to marry Sam, and they raised their family first in Lowell, then Leominster before moving to Glenmeadow in Longmeadow in 2012. She is survived by two sons, Mark Poppel of Albany, Calif., and David Poppel and his wife, Deborah, of Ware; her grandchildren, Benjamin and Rebecca of Denver, Colo., Zachary of Las Vegas, Nev., and Max of Chattanooga, Tenn.; and four-great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, James.
