William “Bill” Gertel, 96, formerly of Springfield, died Sept. 11. He was the husband of Sylvia Gertel. Born in Hrubrieshuv, Poland, he immigrated to Montreal when he was nine. He graduated from Commercial High School as valedictorian of his class. A World War II veteran of the Canadian Army, he attended McGill University and its post-graduate school of accounting and economics. In 1950 he settled in Springfield. He was a partner in, and the financial officer of, Rubin Brothers, a wholesale dry goods distributor. He served as financial secretary of Beth Israel Synagogue and on the board of the United Hebrew Schools. In Springfield he was a member of the Kodimoh Choir and then, for 45 years, of the Temple Beth El Choir. He is survived by two sons, Rabbi Elliot Gertel and Dr. Theodore Gertel and his wife, Joan; four grandchildren, Dr. Alexander Gertel and his wife, Maggie, Aaron Gertel and his wife, Emma Daisy, Jason Gertel and Diana Gertel; and three great-grandchildren, Joey, Lea and Aya.
