Melvin Lavin, 94, of Springfield has died. He was predeceased by his wife, Florence Lavin. Born and raised in Springfield, he was the son of Abraham and Sarah Lavin. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1944 and served in the 824th Tank Destroyer Battalion in the European Theatre including the Battle of the Bulge. He majored in chemistry at UMass Amherst. He worked in sales and marketing at Eastern Container Corporation for 45 years. He is survived by three children, Dr. Robert Lavin and his wife, Tracy Joselson, of Baltimore, Md., Linda Gotlib of Metuchen, N.J., and Dr. Kenneth Lavin and his wife, Michele Garazi, of Barrington, R.I.; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to Temple Beth El or Friends of the IDF.
