NORTHAMPTON – Congregation B’nai Israel Sisterhood and the Northampton-Amherst chapter of Hadassah are cosponsoring “Gender Relations and the Status of Women in Israel,” a talk by Michal Frenkel, Associate Professor of Sociology at Hebrew University, Jerusalem.
The lecture and discussion will be held Thursday, Nov. 15 from 7-9 p.m. at CBI, 253 Prospect St.,
Frenkel, who is currently a visiting professor at Smith College, will discuss the status of different groups of women in Israeli society: secular Israelis, ultra orthodox Jews, and Palestinian Israelis, and try to account for the paradox in which some groups of women advance in certain areas while the freedom, rights, and opportunities of others are threatened or reduced. The talk will be followed by a Community Discussion on this topic moderated by Rabbi Riqi Kosovske of Beit Ahavah in Northampton.
The event is free and open to the public.
