Last month, Heritage Academy students celebrated Yom Hazikaron, Israel’s Memorial Day, and Yom Ha’atzmaut, Israel Independence Day. In honor of Yom Hazikaron, an assembly was planned and led entirely by the middle school students, with guidance from Israeli Young Emissary Daniel Inbar. Music was woven throughout the assembly and Daniel sang a haunting song about an Israeli mother waiting for her son, who is a soldier, to return but, sadly, he does not make it home. Yom Ha’atzmaut was celebrated the next day with Inbar and fellow emissary Yotam Reis. Yotam arrived in a traditional military uniform and had activities and drills for each grade level that gave them a taste of what it might be like to serve in the IDF. Following Yotam’s presentation, Daniel’s father, Giyorah Inbar, spoke about his adventures in the IDF as a top unit commander. The 4th- and 5th-grade students later led the school in a flag parade and the Hebrew and Judaic staff – all Israelis – led the school in traditional Israeli dances, followed by a traditional meal of falafel.
