The 6th grade students at Heritage Academy recently enjoyed four days and three nights at TEVA. TEVA is an award-winning experiential Jewish environmental educator program at the Isabella Freedman Jewish Retreat Center in Falls Village, Conn. Heritage Academy students joined together in learning with students from two other Massachusetts Jewish day schools, Lander Grinspoon Academy in Northampton and JCDS in Watertown.

In the outdoor learning groups, the students gained a new appreciation for the beauty of the forest and studied the soil, air, and water cycle. They also investigated rotting logs, learned about the trees around them, and discovered the ecological interconnection and the importance of nature. Students were also excited about making campfires on the trail and turning their sandwiches into grilled cheese!

The students came back to school ready to teach others what they learned. Their ideas included thoughts on composting and alternative energy. Genius hour takes place each Friday at Heritage Academy and students share their interest and passion in learning with the entire school community.
