Herbert S. Cohen, 89, of Longmeadow and Marco Island, Fla., died April 1. He was the husband of Frances Kelly-Cohen. Born in Springfield, he was the son of the late Mildred “Millie” (Saltman) and Nathan Cohen. He was educated and graduated from Classical High School before enlisting at 17, with his parents’ permission, in the United States Navy in 1944. He was a plank owner of the destroyer escort the U.S.S. Chaffe and saw action in the Pacific. After graduating from New York University, he returned home to operate the family business, Nathan Cohen Jewelers. He was a Shriner, a Mason, belonged to Twin Hills Country Club, and was a lifelong member of Kodimoh Synagogue, now Cong. B’nai Torah. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Joel Cohen of New Jersey, Nanci Granow and her husband, Robert, of North Carolina, Patricia Dudley and her husband, James, of Florida, Kathaleen Kelly of Iowa, Colleen Ryan and her husband, Robert, of Ludlow, and John Kelly and his wife, Linda, of East Longmeadow; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
