Israel Bonds to honor congregational leaders with Star of David Award

WESTERN MASS. – Nine long-time congregational leaders will receive the Star of David Award from Development Corporation for Israel/Israel Bonds at the annual Western Massachusetts Community Event on Tuesday, June 9 at 6 p.m., at Chez Josef in Agawam.

Gil Tamary

The Star of David Award is given in recognition of those who, in the spirit of King David, have demonstrated devotion to the land and people of Israel, true leadership and generosity. Honorees for this year, announced by co-chairs Sharon Cohen and Joan and Michael Rosner, are Leah Finch and Christine Young of Congregation B’nai Israel in Northampton; Nicole and Joseph Illouz of Congregation B’nai Torah in Longmeadow; Bunny Haberman of Congregation Rodphey Sholom in Holyoke; Joanne Saltman of Congregation Sons of Zion in Holyoke; Neta Bolozky of the Jewish Community of Amherst; Laurie Weinberg of Sinai Temple in Springfield; and Rabbi Amy Wallk Katz of Temple Beth El in Springfield.

The special guest speaker for the event is Gil Tamary, the Washington bureau chief for Israel’s Channel 10 News. In 2006, Tamary made media history when he trapped Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad into answering a question he posed at a United Nations press conference. That was the only time the Iranian leader, who does not recognize Israel’s right to exist, has ever spoken to an Israeli journalist.

Cost for the dinner is $65/person. Dietary laws will be observed. For reservations or more information, contact Barbara Starr, Registered Representative, at (860) 656- 2110 or email
