Norman M. Schuman, 85, of Chicopee, formerly of Tom’s River, N.J., died Feb. 8. He was the husband of Lois (Pasteelnick) Schuman for 62 years. Born in the Bronx, N.Y., he was the son of the late Beatrice and Peter Schuman. In his youth he was a Golden Gloves Boxer and was ranked 5th in the nation in the Junior Division of the United States Table Tennis Association. He joined the military at 17 and was sent to Europe in 1948 for the Occupation Army and then served in the Korean War until 1951. He worked for Varian Associates for 30 years. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Ken and his wife, MaryEllen, of Utah; a daughter, Midje Theulen and her husband, Mike, of West Springfield; four grandchildren, Natalie and Madeline Schuman and Zach and Jessie Theulen; a sister, Florence Martin, of Florida; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters, Rosalyn Klein and Bernice Shapiro. Memorial contributions may be made to The Holyoke Soldiers Home.
