NORTHAMPTON – Gan Keshet Preschool and Lander-Grinspoon Academy are co-sponsoring a workshop for parents and professionals to help them better understand trans identities.
The workshop, to be held on Monday, Dec. 5 at 7 p.m., is designed for adults who have questions about what it means to be transgender, or anyone who doesn’t know what cisgender means, and will give cisgender parents, teachers and other professionals the language and confidence to support trans individuals in their lives and workplaces. Participants will learn how to create solid, safer, more inclusive spaces in their workplaces, homes and schools.
Gan Keshet Preschool’s director, Kate Holdsworth was approached by parents who suggested this workshop. She immediately responded to their requests and was fortunate to find Emmett, whose experience, in addition to running educational seminars, also includes working with trans youth and youth from LGBT families.
“Between the ages of 3-5, many children express curiosity about gender (“Are you a boy or a girl?”) as they develop and share their own identity and preferences,” Holdsworth explained. “The goal of this workshop is to help promote awareness, understanding, and respect for gender diversity/trans identity/gender non- conforming individuals–specifically giving teachers and parents the tools and language to talk with children about this important topic.”
Emmett, a sex and gender educator currently attending Hampshire College is facilitating this workshop. Emmett works with trans youth and youth from LGBT families, and also runs educational seminars for parents and professionals.
At 6:15 p.m., a reception will kick off the evening at Lander-Grinspoon Academy, 257 Prospect St., Northampton. The workshop is a collaboration between Gan Keshet Preschool and Lander-Grinspoon Academy. The entire evening is free and open to the community. RSVP to firstname.lastname@example.org to reserve a seat.
