Dr. Melvin L. “Manny” Hutner, 97, of Springfield, died July 9. He was the widower of Dolores Leitzen Hutner. Born in Springfield, he was the son of the late Isaac and Etta Hutner. He graduated from Classical High School and the University of Massachusetts. He went on to study dentistry at Tufts Dental School, and served in the Army Dental Corps, stationed in Japan and the Philippines at the end of World War II. He opened a pediatric dental practice on Union Street in Springfield and soon after completed his orthodontic specialty training at Tufts. For more than 40 years, he provided orthodontic care to hundreds of families. He was elected to and served two terms on the Springfield School Committee (1968–1976). He was a long time member of Temple Beth El, the Springfield JCC, and Crestview Country Club. He is survived by a son, Robert Hutner and his wife, Veronica; two daughters, Nancy Mueller and her husband, Steve, and Loren Hutner; seven grandchildren, Andrew, Natalie, and Abigail Hutner, Michael and Jeffrey Mueller, and Jack and Ross Kamin; a sister-in-law, Ruth Epstein; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Lillian Greene Cohn; and a nephew, Jeffrey Greene.
