Myra Block, 90, of Springfield, died Sept. 9. She was the widow of Merrill Block. Born in Chicago, she attended the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. During World War II, she worked at Navy Pier in Chicago. She and her husband moved to his native Springfield area in 1951. She obtained a Master’s degree in Education from American International College (AIC) and began teaching English as a second language, first at the old School Street Elementary School and then at the DeBerry Elementary School. After retiring, she tutored newly arrived immigrant adults in Western Massachusetts, again focusing on English as a Second Language. For a decade she volunteer with World ORT in Springfield. She was a docent for many years at the Springfield Arts Museums. She is survived by two daughters, Laurie and her husband John Crowley, and Barbara Block; two sons, Ralph Block and his wife, Margot Hintlian, and Charles Block and his wife, Cynthia Fager; and two grandchildren, Hazel and Z.
